Volunteer with Let's Do it Galway and welcome the Volvo Ocean Race to Galway!

When: Anytime you can give during the Grand Finale from 30th June to the 8th July 2012.

Where: Galway city centre and Salthill

What is it?

Volvo is a premier world-wide sporting event, which involves volunteers on many different levels (so you don’t need to be sporty!). The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's premier yacht race for professional racing crews. This is the 11th running of this ocean marathon series since it began life in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and is one of the world's toughest sporting events.

650,000 people visited the Race Village during the Galway stopover in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. 10,000 people lined the harbour walls at 3am on the morning of 24th May 2009 to welcome the Volvo Ocean Race fleet into Ireland, culminating in record crowds of almost 200,000 for the In Port and Pro Am Race. Now it's back!

Ireland's most exciting Festival Event the Volvo Ocean Race Grand Finale is set to enthral the city of Galway again from the 30th June to the 8th July 2012. The Volvo Ocean Race fleet will arrive in from Lorient to Galway on the 3rd July 2012 to the biggest festival in Ireland, that will embrace all cultures from each of the race stopovers. The Volvo Ocean Race Grand Finale 2011-2012 will be an 8 day festival of marine, sport, culture and arts, entertainment and food. Galway will extend the festival to include the Global Village across the harbour which will add to the entertainment and hospitality focus of the Race Village with a networking, exhibition and conference area for the business to business sector. The Galway Global Village will feature shows, exhibitions, entertainment and an unprecedented Grand Finale to the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012. The In-Port race is on the 7th July, after which the winner of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 will be declared.

Why Should I Get Involved?

Volunteers will be key to the success of the Galway closing event and are the ‘face' of the event to visitors at the Race Village. Prominent throughout, they will be the central point of information and ensure the village is friendly, safe and accessible for all.  Volunteers will be integral to the positive impact of this event which places Galway and Ireland centre stage to a two billion global audience. Volunteers will experience an international sporting event first-hand, build new skills and, most importantly have fun

What do volunteers do?

There are many exciting on-water and on-shore opportunities available to Volunteers during the Galway Stopover, where people will be assigned to information points, the media centre, race management, spectator services, and many other exciting events taking place throughout the race village. There is also a schools programme so you can help give tours of the Race village for primary school children.

Volunteers Training Programme
This is an event of International Standard for which we plan to deliver a volunteer programme to the same level. To this end Volunteers will be required to undergo specific training, which will introduce volunteers to a ‘day in the life' of the event, their team, and their specific role in the event. All volunteers will be required to attend at least two sessions, depending on the role to which they are assigned.

Benefits of Volunteering
• All volunteers working a full shift will be entitled to a meal voucher
• There will be an awards system in place for volunteers who complete all elements of the training programme and all shifts assigned during the stopover- win free stuff!
• Free!! Access to events being held during the festival
• The official Galway Stopover Volunteer T-Shirt (unique to the volunteer programme)
